Crowns

A dental crown treatment involves placing a custom-made cap over a damaged tooth to restore its shape, size, strength, and appearance. Crowns are used to protect a tooth from further damage, improve its function, and enhance its aesthetic. The process typically requires two appointments, one to prepare the tooth and take an impression, and another to permanently cement the custom-made crown in place.

What is a dental crown?

  • A dental crown, also known as a cap, is a tooth-shaped covering that encases the entire visible portion of a tooth, extending at or below the gum line.

  • It is used to protect and strengthen a tooth that is damaged, decayed, or has undergone a root canal.

What is the procedure like?

  • First visit:

The dentist will examine the tooth, prepare it by reshaping it, and take an impression of the tooth and surrounding teeth.

  • Temporary Crown:

A temporary crown is placed to protect the tooth while the permanent crown is being made at the dental lab.

  • Second visit:

The temporary crown is removed, and the permanent crown is cemented into place.

What are the different types of crowns?

  • Full Metal Crowns: Durable and strong, often used for back teeth.

  • Porcelain Fused to Metal (PFM) Crowns: A type of dental restoration that combines the strength of a metal base with the aesthetic appeal of porcelain. The porcelain layer mimics the appearance of natural teeth

  • Porcelain Crowns: Mimic the appearance of natural teeth, popular for visible teeth.

How long do crowns last?

With proper care, crowns can last between 5 to 15 years.
